Hiroshi Sugimoto – Lightning Fields

Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto has always used his camera to explore unseen phenomena like artifacts of time, light, the elements, and human perception. In his latest series, Lightning Fields, he essentially established a micro-environment in the dark room akin to the conditions of an electrical storm. Sugimoto creates lush large-scale black and white prints that resemble botanical and biological images, landscapes, high-power microscopic magnifications, and lightning itself. Sugimoto is considered one of the greatest living photographers, he constantly pushes the limits of what photography can achieve.

We selected some photos for you, please let us know what you think!

Blue Blood donates 5% of their turnover to Haiti

Haiti was struck by a major earthquake, knocking down buildings and power lines and inflicting what can be called a catastrophe for the Western Hemisphere’s poorest nation.

Blue Blood wants to offer a helping hand where they can. We  therefore decided to donate 5% of the turnover of our Blue Blood stores on Saturday and donate it to the victims of Haiti.

If you wanna help the victims you can do so here (for Dutch visitors) or help through buying something in our stores on Saturday.

Let’s unite For Our Friends worldwide!

365 days a year, 365 blogposts..

At Blue Blood we’re always looking around on the internet for creative people with extraordinary projects. Lisa Congdon is one of those people. She started a blog on the first of January 2010. It is a blog documenting a project that will span exactly one year. On each of those 365 days she will photograph or draw one collection. Most of the collections are real and exist in her home or studio. Some are imagined and those she will draw.

Since she was young she had an obsession with collecting and arranging, organizing and displaying her collections. The blog gives her the opportunity to share her work with whoever might be interested in looking at them.

So take a look at her blog and see how her collection expands through the year!

Denim may thwart rattlesnake venom

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – If you’re planning a trek into the wild, you might want to pack jeans instead of shorts. A new study suggests that a layer of denim offers at least some protection from rattlesnake bites.

It might seem logical that any barrier between you and a rattlesnake’s fangs would be a good thing. But it has not been clear whether ordinary clothing can actually reduce the amount of venom that penetrates the skin.

In the new study, researchers at Loma Linda University in California looked at whether denim might offer some venom protection.

Drs. Shelton S. Herbert and William K. Hayes used latex gloves filled with saline to simulate a human appendage, then exposed the gloves to bites from small and large southern Pacific rattlesnakes. Some of the latex “limbs” were covered in a layer of denim.

The researchers found that compared with the jeans-less gloves, those covered in denim absorbed about two-thirds less venom from the rattlesnake bites. Instead, a high proportion of the venom “spilled harmlessly” onto the denim, the researchers report in the Annals of Emergency Medicine.

Worldwide, up to 2 million people are bitten by a venomous snake each year, resulting in as many as 100,000 deaths, Herbert and Hayes note in their report.

Untreated, rattlesnake bites are potentially fatal, so victims should get to a hospital emergency room right away.

While avoiding rattlers and their bites is always preferable, jeans may at least lessen the amount of venom that penetrates the body, according to Herbert and Hayes.

“Wearing long denim pants as an alternative to shorts,” they write, “may provide a simple, low-cost means of reducing the severity of snakebites.”
